i dont have chalk&wire yet

Final Exam. Course Reflection.

In light of this one class, I have decided to become a teacher. The course provided some very helpful information not only in terms of technology, but also in overall teaching strategy. Throughout the semester, I have engaged in many critical thinking activities that have not only strengthened my technological literacy, but also encouraged the thought process for assignments in my classroom. As the semester progressed, I noticed that I was already improving in my general understanding of teaching. I learned that my assignments must be very thorough and interesting. My biggest concern for many of my assignments was the depth that I had created. I have collected many skills that will more than likely provide useful to my teaching experiences. English 3241, has not only encouraged me to become a teacher, it has made the decision relatively easy and enjoyable.

In this semester with English 3241, I have collected many beneficial resources for my teaching career. First, the final assignment, our Digital Media presentation, was extremely useful. I learned how to create a movie that could be shown to my classrooms, and keep the student’s attention and provoke their considerations, analyses, and thought process. Next, the online blog, was something I never considered as being useful in a classroom, however, after creating and exploring the concept of online blogs, I have found that it can become a valued tool for classrooms. The online blog can help me keep an entire portfolio for my students to access at anytime for assignments, homework, or even something as simple as a course schedule. In my journey through the English major, I hope to use my blog to stockpile created assignments and useful websites for my students. Being that I am very technologically sound, I believe I can create assignments from videos and other technology very easily.

I did not see any assignment that didn’t expand my technological knowledge. Some projects seemed tedious, considering the over-use of certain pieces of technology, but in light, these only expanded our awareness of such programs and tools. An aspect that could have been improved is the vast expanse of smaller items that were shown, such as various websites such as teachertube, wikispaces, and even wikipedia. These assignments made us familiar with such websites, but in the end seemed to clutter our collective, instead of providing useful. I felt that the class as a whole, benefited from every assignment or suggestion, no matter how miniscule they seemed. Each website or resource provided just one more option for us and our students.

Overall, English 3241 has opened my eyes to a new world of classroom learning. The potential of technology is limitless, and with this lack of boundaries, we find that some of this information can be relevant and helpful to future generations. If we simply cannot get a student to read a novel, perhaps we can still make them understand the concepts portrayed, through another means, such as technology. Our youth responds to technology with great interest, and incorporating it into the classroom is a giant leap in educating them.

Thanks for an eye-opening semester Crovitz, I look forward to working with you, and using your guidance throughout my journey to becoming a teacher.

warm-up assignment, or day lesson

I recently discovered this instrumental band, god is an astronaut, and turns out they have a reputation for controversial videos. I think that this video could be an easy day assignment, if even just for a sub or something. Write a two paragraph response for each of these videos, the students shouldn’t be at a lack of words by any means.

should controversial history be taken this lightly?

In Seth Green’s television show on Cartoon Network, Robot Chicken does a skit involving a very tragic moment in history, and makes it hillarious. This assignment may have to be for high schoolers, I am not sure if the younger ones would be allowed to view it or not.

LITTLE HITLER

This clip was taken from the television show Robot Chicken. Does anything seem sort of…controversial?

Individually, write down other media instances you’ve encountered that have taken tragic history a little too lightly, then in another column, find some instances in which history has been portrayed “accurately” to the public.

Next, in groups of two to four, create your own parody of a crucial moment in history, or currently.
Including drawings, make it a “mini-comic-strip”.
Make sure it class appropriate, and ethnically sensitive.

Answer the following for homework.

1. Which column had the most? Which column do you own or like more? Why?
2. Is this clip from Robot Chicken attempting to instill an opinion? Describe and explain.
3. If the creator of the show was Jewish (which in fact he is), then do light-hearted jokes like these serve a purpose in our society?
4. How do these portrayls compare with the political cartoons of earlier newspaper days?

technology quiz

this survey concludes what tech type you are.

thus…
MY Results

Based on your answers to the questionnaire, you most closely resemble survey respondents within the Omnivores typology group. This does not mean that you necessarily fit every group characteristic.
Omnivores make up 8% of the American public.
Basic Description
Members of this group use their extensive suite of technology tools to do an enormous range of things online, on the go, and with their cell phones. Omnivores are highly engaged with video online and digital content. Between blogging, maintaining their Web pages, remixing digital content, or posting their creations to their websites, they are creative participants in cyberspace.
Defining Characteristics
You might see them watching video on an iPod. They might talk about their video games or their participation in virtual worlds the way their parents talked about their favorite TV episode a generation ago. Much of this chatter will take place via instant messages, texting on a cell phone, or on personal blogs. Omnivores are particularly active in dealing with video content. Most have video or digital cameras, and most have tried watching TV on a non-television device, such as a laptop or a cell phone.
Omnivores embrace all this connectivity, feeling confident in how they manage information and their many devices. This puts information technology at the center of how they express themselves, do their jobs, and connect to their friends.
Who They Are
They are young, ethnically diverse, and mostly male (70%). The median age is 28; just more than half of them are under age 30, versus one in five in the general population. Over half are white (64%) and 11% are black (compared to 12% in the general population). English-speaking Hispanics make up 18% of this group. Perhaps unsurprisingly, many (42% versus the 13% average) of Omnivores are students

wait a tick…

Onto teachertube.com, I have uploaded a video that conerns a certain algebraic equation dubbed “The Fibonacci Sequence” and a certain band by the name of tool. The video explains the mathematical idea, but here is a picture, just to clarify.

fibon3.gif

The video explains the math equation’s significance within the song “Lateralus”.

I also reccomend you read this article that clarifies the The Fibonacci Sequence’s relevance to tool’s entire album “Lateralus”.

It may not be English, but it is somewhat educational.

here is the link to the video.

Radiohead for free?

radiohead_in_rainbows2.jpg
That’s right. One of the world’s biggest bands is giving their 7th album, “In Rainbows” away…for free. After keeping fans waiting for months with news that the new album would be arriving early 2008, Radiohead unveiled a true shock to the music community. Through the website www.inrainbows.com, one can add the download to their order, and simply choose how much they wish to pay for it. However, the most surprising aspect of all of this, could be the fact that Radiohead is currently completly void of a record label contract, taking on this mission with their own money, their own time, and their own tools.

Is this really that surprising? Did you see something like this coming to the music industry? I have heard of other popular bands doing this, however, none as massive as Radiohead.

How does this impact the world of technology and music?

Could this possibly move into other segments of entertainment such as movies?

What are some possible benefits that you can think of for allowing free downloads? Some downsides?

The free download does have its drawbacks. For 40 euro, you can purchase the “discbox”, which contains the album “In Rainbows” as well as a bonus disk, with both also appearing in vinyl. So…no listening to the bonus disk, until you fess up and throw some money down.

I am going to get back to listening.

Tech in the Room

The people at the…
International Electronic Journal
For Leadership in Learning

…have put together a short “brochure”, if you will, about the introduction of various forms of technology into the English classroom. The page is broken down into 6 “chapters”, which are linked at the beginning of the article, an electronic table of contents. The site includes many links to helpful sites, some of which I have included on my “Education” page. The author is clearly pro-technology, and provides an honest bias, filled with expierence and credible references.

A must read.
